Zermatt is located at the foot of the Matterhorn. Its development is closely linked to this summit, which is arguably one of the most famous mountains in the world. This car-free holiday village has retained its authentic character and offers countless possibilities for excursions. Zermatt's location at the foot of the Matterhorn and in the heart of a huge hiking and winter sports region makes it one of the most attractive holiday villages in the world. Its ski area includes 54 chairlifts and ski lifts and 360 kilometers of slopes. The "Matterhorn Glacier Paradise" region is the largest and highest summer ski area in Europe. Many national ski teams train there in summer. The region is also well known to mountaineers: this is where the Haute Route ends, a very demanding international route lasting several days which starts in the Mont-Blanc region and ends in Zermatt. More than 400 kilometers of paths crisscross the Matter Valley and lead far beyond, like the partially paved mule tracks that date from the 13th century. In winter, the snow-guaranteed ski area offers 360 km of slopes in three very different regions: Sunnegga-Rothorn, Gornergrat-Stockhorn, Lac Noir and Matterhorn glacier paradise. Snowboarders and freestylers find their happiness at Snowpark Zermatt, where the candidates for the Olympic Games also train. From the Matterhorn glacier paradise / Col de Théodule, it is possible to reach the Italian ski area of Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche. And, if you like a change, you can try your hand at paragliding or heliskiing off the prepared slopes, supervised by an experienced mountain guide.
